Time to Honor Our Harvesters: Happy Thanksgiving Day!
You may never wonder how your fruits, vegetables and meats get to your kitchen table, other than that you pick them up in neatly packaged bundles at your local grocery store or supermarket. Perhaps it is time to give that some thought. This Thanksgiving, take time to be grateful for where that food comes from and the people who work tirelessly to provide it for your nourishment and enjoyment.
Farm workers are among the lowest paid individuals in the United States, or any country for that matter. In general, they are also looked down upon by most other members of society as a burden or a collectively pitiable group of individuals. They work long hours for little pay, and do so to provide you with the foods that end up on your table at Thanksgiving and every other day of the year. If not for their efforts, there would literally be a global food crisis.
When you are giving thanks this holiday season, remember those who work to ensure that you have the ingredients to prepare your elaborate feast. If possible, show your gratitude in ways that honor their efforts. Regardless of how you express your thanks and appreciation, always keep in mind when you sit down to eat that your food does indeed come from the hard work of hands just like yours.
